The global financial crisis has hit world football hard, and club giants Asante Kotoko have moved to generate cash through other means. The making of the merchandise is now being handled by the Champion Group. The transfer of rights was done to enhance accountability and expedite the profit-making capacity of the club.

No specific financial details were mentioned however SuperSport.com sources say the club sold just procuring and merchandising rights. Manufacturing rights are already owned by Italian sportswear company Erreà.

Kotoko´s management earlier launched the latest line of replica jerseys and merchandise for its fans. Executive Chairman Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong said he the club envisions the materials as new fashion statements for its fans.

“If anything at all, I expect fans to have at least the Home and Away replica shirts so that they properly identify with the team when we play at home and also go away for matches”.

He hinted that this latest move is only the first in a broad plan to generate needed revenue for the smooth running of the club.

“I want at this point to crave the indulgence of Kotoko supporters to ask that as from our next match which happens to be the first leg of the MTN Super Two Cup match against Hearts at the Baba Yara Stadium on coming Sunday, we all be attired in the replica shirts and also fly the beautiful Kotoko flags at the stadium”.

The club tried to produce its own kits under the Fabusports brand this this year but could not meet the financial shortfall. Dr. Sarpong also encouraged supporters of the club to endeavor to at least have the two replica shirts.

“It is not a bad idea for Kotoko supporters to now see the various Kotoko shirts as the official uniforms for use when attending Kotoko matches”.

There is the usual line of polo shirts, replica jerseys, flags, wrist bands and so on, as well as caps, and soon to arrive customized apparel and loafers.

The new right holder for the merchandise, Champion Group of Companies, is owned by Kumasi-based businessman, Kwame Frimpong.
