Everton praise for Nyarko comeback

Everton assistant boss Alan Irvine praised Alex Nyarko on his return to the first team after last night's 1-0 win over Charlton in the Carling Cup.

The Ghanaian completed a two-year absence to play a significant role in Everton's victory and Irvine said, "Alex took his chance very well. Myself and David Moyes were not at the club when things happened before, so we have no grudges.

"He came in and played well. It was also pleasing to hear the crowd's support for him before the game and when he came off at the end. It will have encouraged him."

Toby Linderoth struck the winner and Charlton boss Alan Curbishley said afterwards: "We had so many chances and played really well - but if you do not take those chances you get punished.

"Our record in cups is dreadful, and this just adds to it.

"You have to score when the opportunities are there, and Jason (Euell) will feel he should have done better with chances in each half.

"But he has been out injured for a few weeks and lacks sharpness.

"We were missing four strikers so I did not have much choice but to play him. When I get some of the other lads fit, I will be able to do something about it.

"I felt we deserved to win, we certainly had the best chances.

"While we managed to restrict Everton to just a few openings, and even then their winner came from a deflected shot that hit the bar."
