Order Restored in Ntotroso After Attempted Gold Theft at Newmont Mining Site

The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored order in Ntotroso, a town in the Ahafo Region, following a violent incident on the night of Wednesday, January 8, 2025. The unrest began when a group of individuals allegedly attempted to break into the Newmont mining site to steal gold. The confrontation between the suspects and police resulted in the death of three individuals and injuries to four others.




In a statement issued on Thursday, January 9, the police announced that calm had returned to the town after proactive measures were taken. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, coordinated with the Regional Police team to engage community leaders and youth, ensuring the situation did not escalate further.

“The Inspector-General of Police…worked on the phone with the Regional Police team to engage community leaders and the youth…to stabilize the situation,” the police statement noted.

An investigative team has been dispatched to thoroughly examine the incident, while reinforcement personnel have been deployed to maintain peace. The police confirmed that the three deceased individuals were Muslims and assured that due legal processes are being followed to release their bodies for burial.

Authorities have urged the community to remain calm as investigations continue.
