Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is passed by the current Parliament.

Speaking at the Kasoa Traditional Leaders and Stakeholders Forum, Bagbin expressed confidence that the present composition of Parliament is better positioned to see the bill through to completion. The forum brought together traditional authorities, local residents, and government officials to deliberate on development issues affecting the area.

Addressing concerns about delays, the Speaker explained that the bill’s earlier setback was due to the refusal of the former president to grant assent after it was approved by the previous Parliament. With the dissolution of that Parliament, the legislative process had to restart, effectively halting its progress at the time.

Bagbin noted that the renewed push reflects strong public sentiment, emphasizing that the bill was largely shaped by contributions from citizens and traditional leaders across the country. According to him, Parliament has a responsibility to align its decisions with the values and expectations of the people.

He further highlighted differences between the current and previous parliamentary compositions, suggesting that the new structure provides a more decisive advantage in passing the legislation. He assured stakeholders that once Parliament reconvenes, the bill will be given priority consideration.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has been one of the most widely debated legislative proposals in Ghana in recent years. While supporters argue it seeks to uphold cultural and family values, critics have raised concerns about its implications for human rights and freedoms.

With Bagbin’s latest remarks, the bill appears set to return to the forefront of parliamentary business, potentially reigniting national debate as lawmakers prepare to take it up again.
