President John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law following an appeal by Nigerian music star Asake over the arrest of a man identified as Cyborg.

Cyborg was taken into custody on December 29 after allegedly discharging a firearm into the air in celebration during a meet-up with the Afrobeats star earlier in the week.

Asake raised the issue during a brief exchange with President Mahama on December 30 at the Supercar Spectacle Sponsors Appreciation event in Accra, where the President met and exchanged pleasantries with the musician and his entourage.

In a light-hearted moment, President Mahama referred to the incident, asking, “He’s the one the guy fired the gun for?” When those around him confirmed this, he remarked, “And he ended up in trouble,” drawing laughter from those present.

Asake then apologised on behalf of Cyborg, urging the President to temper justice with mercy and explaining that the gunshot was fired in the excitement of the moment.

President Mahama acknowledged the apology but stressed that legal procedures must be respected. “Don’t worry about it. The law is the law,” he said.

Asake is currently in Ghana following his performance at the AfroFuture Festival, one of the country’s major end-of-year music events.
