The spokesperson for Ghana’s National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has revealed that the revered religious leader hopes to see the country’s controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ bill passed into law before his death.

Speaking during an interview on GTV on April 2, 2026, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu said the Chief Imam considers the legislation a deeply important matter and would like the process expedited.

According to Shaibu, “His wish would have been that you will sign this or expedite the process before he dies,” emphasizing the urgency the Chief Imam attaches to the bill.

He also called on President John Dramani Mahama to honor what he described as a key campaign promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 elections. Shaibu noted that many Ghanaians supported the party with the expectation that the bill would be prioritized.

While stressing that the matter should not be politicized, the spokesperson expressed disappointment over recent comments by the President suggesting that the LGBTQ+ issue is not among his administration’s top priorities.

“I would have wished that he stayed there, but to say it is not a top priority… during the campaign period, it was a priority matter,” Shaibu said, adding that the issue significantly influenced voter sentiment.

Invoking the moral authority of the Chief Imam, Shaibu described his stance as firm and unwavering. “The old man is my father, is your father, and that is his stance on this matter. His stance is so strong against LGBT,” he stated.

He further urged President Mahama to remain resolute despite possible external pressures, encouraging him to act decisively. Shaibu also assured the President of support from the Muslim community, indicating that religious groups stand ready to back the government on the issue.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill remains one of the most debated topics in Ghana, drawing strong opinions from religious leaders, civil society groups, and the international community.
