The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has demanded strong action from the leadership of the Ghana National Fire Service following the alleged assault on a Class Media Group journalist at Kasoa New Market.

The journalist, Samuel Addo, was reportedly attacked by fire service officers on Monday, January 5, 2026, while covering a fire outbreak at the market. The officers allegedly attempted to stop him from filming the scene, resulting in a confrontation that was captured on video and widely circulated online.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, January 6, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour condemned the incident and called on the Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, to publicly denounce the actions of the officers involved.

“Furthermore, the GJA demands that the leadership of the Ghana National Fire Service, led by the Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, publicly condemns this assault, identifies the officers involved and applies severe internal sanctions, including dismissal where appropriate,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.

He warned that any attempt to shield the officers or downplay the incident would be strongly opposed by the Association.

Mr. Dwumfour reiterated that the assault represents a serious threat to press freedom and the safety of journalists, stressing the need for accountability to deter future attacks on media professionals carrying out their lawful duties.

The GJA said it remains committed to defending press freedom and ensuring that journalists can work without fear of intimidation or violence.
