The Government of Ghana has issued a firm denunciation of the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, warning that the unfolding situation poses a serious threat to democratic governance in the region.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Ghana said it was “deeply troubled” by the actions of sections of the Guinea-Bissau armed forces, which seized control just days after presidential and legislative elections were peacefully conducted on November 23.
According to the statement, the intervention by the military has interrupted the electoral process and prevented the official announcement of results expected on November 27. Ghana stressed that the move “undermines the sovereign will of the people of Guinea-Bissau,” urging all actors to pursue constitutional and transparent mechanisms to address any electoral concerns.
The government further appealed for the immediate reinstatement of democratic order while urging calm among citizens and political stakeholders in Guinea-Bissau.
Ghana also highlighted the need to safeguard the rights of civilians, foreign nationals, and particularly the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission deployed in the country. It called for guarantees of their safety and unrestricted movement.
Reaffirming its commitment to ECOWAS and the African Union, Ghana expressed readiness to support coordinated regional efforts aimed at restoring stability and upholding the continent’s established principles on democratic governance and constitutional rule.
