Ghana Stays on Course to End HIV/AIDS by 2030 — President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated Ghana’s unwavering commitment to achieving the global target of ending HIV/AIDS by 2030, assuring that the country is taking decisive steps to sustain progress despite recent funding challenges.

In a meeting with the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Winnie Byanyima, President Mahama said Ghana has already identified alternative funding sources to make up for the shortfall resulting from the withdrawal of PEPFAR support. He stressed that maintaining existing gains and accelerating national efforts remains a top priority for his administration.

“The most affected segment of our population are young girls and women. This trend is deeply worrying and demands urgent and critical attention,” President Mahama stated, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to protect vulnerable groups.

The President also commended the continued advocacy and support programmes led by First Lady Lordina Mahama, who has been working closely with the Ghana AIDS Commission. Her efforts focus on combating the spread of the virus, providing support for persons living with HIV, fighting stigma, and promoting their full integration into society to lead meaningful and dignified lives.

President Mahama further agreed with the UNAIDS Executive Director that a strengthened and united global HIV response is essential to address emerging challenges that threaten decades of progress.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to play its part in global efforts while intensifying domestic strategies to ensure no one is left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
