The Government of Ghana is set to introduce a new digital platform that will allow citizens to report power outages instantly באמצעות WhatsApp, in a move aimed at improving response times and enhancing service delivery across the electricity sector.
The initiative was announced by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, during the final day of the President’s resetting tour of the Northern Region. According to the Minister, the system will eliminate the need for traditional call centres, which are often associated with delays and inefficiencies.
“We are committed to improving both the electricity subsector, the renewable sector, and the petroleum sector. We’ll also improve on our communication,” Dr. Jinapor stated.
He explained that under the new system, consumers experiencing outages will no longer need to make phone calls to report faults. Instead, they can simply send a message via WhatsApp, including their location, to trigger a rapid response from technical teams.
“We are going to launch a system where when you have the least outage, you don’t even need to call. Just send a WhatsApp message with your location, and we shall dispatch men and women there to address your problem in real time,” he added.
The move marks a significant shift toward real-time service delivery in Ghana’s power sector. Authorities expect the platform to reduce downtime, streamline communication between consumers and service providers, and significantly improve the overall customer experience.
Beyond faster fault resolution, the rollout is also seen as part of a broader effort to deepen digital engagement in public service delivery. By leveraging widely used mobile technology, the government aims to bridge longstanding gaps in outage reporting and response times, particularly in underserved areas.
The WhatsApp-based system is expected to be rolled out in phases, with further details on implementation timelines to be announced in the coming months.
