GoldBod CEO Announces 2027 Mining Formalisation and Financing Programme

GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi has announced plans to introduce an Artisanal and Small-scale Mining Formalisation and Financing Support Programme (FFSP) in 2027 as part of efforts to improve the operations of Ghana’s small-scale mining industry.

The proposed initiative is expected to provide support for eligible artisanal and small-scale miners, helping them operate within the formal economy while improving productivity and environmental responsibility.

Mr Gyamfi said the programme would be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the University of Mines and Technology and Rand Refinery.

According to him, the initiative is intended to increase gold production, boost mineral revenue and create employment opportunities while reducing operational costs and environmental risks.

The planned programme forms part of a broader strategy to formalise eligible unlicensed small-scale miners through legal documentation, permits, certifications, training and access to financing support.

Mr Gyamfi has argued that bringing eligible operators into the formal mining sector would be more effective than relying solely on security operations to pursue miners working outside protected areas.

He has also stressed that formalisation would not extend to mining activities that pollute water bodies, take place in forest reserves or endanger communities.

The proposed financing support programme is expected to complement the government’s Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), which seeks to transform eligible operators into licensed and responsible miners.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen traceability in the gold supply chain and encourage mining practices that comply with environmental and regulatory standards.

While the programme is scheduled for introduction in 2027, further details on its implementation arrangements, eligibility criteria and financing structure were not provided in the announcement.
