The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, have assured Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa of the government’s full support as they return home following renewed xenophobic tensions.
The first batch of evacuees arrived safely in Accra on Wednesday, May 27, as part of a government-led evacuation exercise coordinated through Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A government delegation led by Mr. Debrah and Mr. Ablakwa was at the airport to receive the returnees and oversee initial reintegration efforts.
Addressing the evacuees, Mr. Debrah encouraged them to remain hopeful despite the challenges that forced their return.
“Most importantly, we want to encourage our brothers and sisters that once they are back, they should be very optimistic and hopeful about the future,” he said. “As a nation, we shall always stand by our people, no matter where you find yourself. Be encouraged, and believe that it shall all end well.”
Mr. Ablakwa also assured the returnees of comprehensive government support, including medical care, counselling and financial assistance to help them resettle.
“Today’s welcome ceremony is fully packed. You are going to receive psychosocial support. We have psychologists, medical doctors and nurses ready to assist you,” he stated.
He further disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama had approved special support packages for the evacuees, including transportation allowances to enable them return to their respective communities.
The evacuation follows rising xenophobic tensions in parts of South Africa, which have sparked fear among foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, amid reports of attacks, intimidation and destruction of property.
Government officials say the evacuation exercise will continue in phases, with more citizens expected to be brought home, while diplomatic efforts remain ongoing to ensure the safety of Ghanaians still residing abroad.
