President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that the professional backgrounds of the newly appointed Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah and Emelia Afi Agbenyo, will contribute to improving the Commission’s operations and electoral administration.

Speaking at their swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 12, the President highlighted their respective areas of expertise and urged them to use their experience to strengthen the institution’s internal systems, improve service delivery and promote credible elections.

Dr Asamoah, a lecturer in law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), previously served the EC as Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.

According to President Mahama, Dr Asamoah’s background in law, accounting, economics and electoral administration would be valuable in improving the training of electoral officers and ensuring the effective management of public resources.

The President also highlighted Ms Agbenyo’s experience in public administration, institutional leadership and stakeholder engagement.

Before her appointment, she served as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, where she gained experience in coordinating operations and implementing policies.

President Mahama urged her to draw on that experience to strengthen the Commission’s administrative processes and improve engagement with stakeholders.

He also emphasised the importance of fairness and impartiality, insisting that both appointees must ensure the EC treats all political parties and candidates equally, including the President, his government and the governing party.

The President said the Commission’s credibility depends on public confidence in its ability to carry out its mandate transparently, accountably and without political interference.

He further encouraged the new Deputy Chairpersons to listen to concerns from political parties, civil society organisations, the media and citizens, and respond appropriately to legitimate complaints.

Their appointments follow the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare, effective July 31, 2026, and the retirement of former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey.
