President John Dramani Mahama is expected to visit the Akosombo Dam today, Thursday, to evaluate the situation following a recent fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) substation that has disrupted power supply across parts of the country.
The incident, which damaged key equipment at the facility, resulted in the loss of over 1,000 megawatts of electricity to the national grid. This has led to intermittent outages in several areas, sparking concerns about a return of the persistent power challenges commonly referred to as “dumsor.”
During the visit, the President is anticipated to receive briefings from engineers and technical teams overseeing repair works at the site. The tour is also expected to provide firsthand insight into the extent of the damage and the progress made so far in restoring stable electricity supply.
Government officials say efforts are underway to normalize the situation. According to Energy Minister John Jinapor, four of the affected power generation units at the dam have already been brought back into operation, with the remaining units projected to be fully restored within the week.
The visit will also focus on identifying long-term measures to strengthen the country’s power transmission system and prevent similar disruptions in the future.
Authorities have assured the public that restoring consistent power remains a top priority as work continues at the affected facilities.
