Ghana’s democratic institutions continue to demonstrate strength and accountability as Parliament seeks further clarity on President John Dramani Mahama’s recent diplomatic trips abroad.
Hon. Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, has indicated that the Minority in Parliament is requesting additional details regarding the President’s use of a chartered jet during some of his international engagements.
Speaking on the Channel One TV Newsroom programme, Asafo-Adjei Ayeh explained that the request forms part of Parliament’s oversight role aimed at promoting transparency and responsible governance.
Together with fellow lawmaker Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Bosome Freho MP has submitted a formal parliamentary question to the Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs.
The inquiry seeks to understand the circumstances under which presidential travel decisions are made, how official delegations are selected, and the funding mechanisms for such trips. According to Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, Parliament has already compiled records of the President’s officially communicated travels and is now seeking a comprehensive briefing from the relevant ministers.
He emphasized that the initiative is not a conclusion but part of Parliament’s due diligence to ensure accountability in the management of public resources.
“My colleague, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, and I have filed a question in this regard. We have catalogued all the travels of the president that have officially been communicated to Parliament,” he stated.
He further noted that once the Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs provide detailed responses, Parliament will be in a better position to assess the matter and present its position.
Political observers say the development reflects Ghana’s commitment to transparent governance, where parliamentary oversight works hand in hand with executive leadership as President Mahama continues to strengthen Ghana’s diplomatic relations and international cooperation.
The process highlights a functioning democracy where questions are encouraged, answers are expected, and national leadership remains accountable to the people.
