Rainstorm Batters Coastal Belt as GMet Issues Fresh Alert

A heavy rainstorm has been sweeping across Ghana’s coastal belt, causing widespread downpours and raising concerns about possible flooding in several communities.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (Ghana Meteorological Agency) has issued a fresh impact-based weather alert warning that the storm system could intensify further as it moves across southern parts of the country.

According to the agency, a dense band of rain clouds has already covered inland sections of the coastal zone and parts of the forest belt, creating conditions for moderate to heavy rainfall. Areas including Accra, Tema, Cape Coast, and surrounding communities have experienced strong rainfall activity, with some locations recording heavy downpours.

Meteorologists also noted that an additional storm system developing along the Ghana–Togo border, influenced by weather activity advancing from southern Benin, is contributing to the unstable conditions. This is expected to increase rainfall intensity across the coastal, middle, and transition zones later in the day.

The GMet forecast indicates that several communities, including Ho, Koforidua, Akosombo, Winneba, and Kumasi, could experience continued rainfall and possible stormy conditions into the night.

Under its impact-based forecasting system, some affected areas have been placed under “Take Action” and “Be Prepared” categories, signaling the risk of flooding, strong winds, and disruption to movement.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert, avoid crossing fast-flowing water, and take precautions as strong winds may precede the storms.

The agency says the alert forms part of its efforts to improve early warning systems and reduce the impact of severe weather during the ongoing rainy season.
