The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has begun a two-day monitoring tour of rural telephony project sites and community information centres in the Volta Region to assess their progress, operational status and effectiveness.

The exercise, which commenced on Thursday, October 15, 2026, is expected to end on Friday, October 16, 2026, and forms part of efforts to ensure that investments in telecommunications infrastructure and digital services deliver tangible benefits to communities.

Mr George began the first day of the tour with a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, before proceeding to inspect selected facilities across the region.

The first day's activities included a visit to the Ho Community Information Centre, which operates under the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), followed by an inspection of the new Rural Telephony Project site at Akoefe Gadza in Ho Central.

The Minister also visited the Silverstone Youth ICT Lab, an OMCP centre in the Agotime-Ziope area, and the old rural telephony site at Akoefe to assess their current conditions and operational status.

The second day of the tour is expected to begin at the Ho Regional Information Centre, where Mr George will inspect the One Million Coders Project facility. He is also scheduled to visit the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho, the old rural telephony site at Adaklu-Blidokope, the OMCP centre at Adaklu-Waya, and new rural telephony project sites at Adaklu-Dawanu and Adaklu-Kpetsu.

During the inspections, the Minister is expected to assess the level of work completed at the various sites, identify operational challenges and determine whether the facilities are achieving their intended objectives.

The Rural Telephony Project seeks to extend mobile network coverage to underserved and unserved communities, particularly in rural areas, to improve access to reliable communication services and bridge the digital divide.

Community and Regional Information Centres, on the other hand, are designed to improve access to information, support digital services and provide platforms for government communication and information sharing.

The monitoring exercise is expected to provide the Ministry with firsthand information on challenges relating to project completion, maintenance and the effective utilisation of the facilities.

Findings from the tour will inform decisions on measures to improve telecommunications infrastructure, strengthen digital service delivery and expand access to communication services across the Volta Region.

The exercise forms part of broader government efforts to ensure that public investments in rural connectivity and digital infrastructure translate into practical benefits for communities with limited access to telecommunications networks and digital services.
