Security has been heightened nationwide as delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cast their ballots to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 presidential elections.

Voting has begun at multiple centres across the country, including the Teshie Anglican Primary ‘B’, Harrow International Preparatory School in Okaikwei Central, the Ayawaso North voting centre where the first ballot was cast at 7:10 a.m., and Bimbilla, where voting also commenced at 7:10 a.m. Polls are equally underway at the Pastoral Centre in the Sunyani East Constituency.

Police officers have been deployed to all polling centres to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and credible voting process. In some constituencies, including Effia in the Western Region, voting is taking place under heavy police presence.

The internal party election is being closely monitored, as it is expected to shape the future direction of the NPP following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. Over 211,000 delegates are expected to participate in the exercise nationwide.

Five aspirants are vying for the position of flagbearer: Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The NPP leadership has called on delegates to vote responsibly and uphold party unity after the declaration of results, stressing the importance of cohesion as the party prepares for the 2028 presidential contest.
