Repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact seven Ghanaian fishermen who failed to return from a fishing expedition prompted their owner to report their disappearance to the police, according to the Western Regional Marine Police Command.
The fishermen had departed the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on Friday, October 9, for a fishing expedition offshore Axim but did not return as expected.
The owner of the canoe, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the incident to the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on Sunday, October 18.
According to preliminary investigations, efforts to reach the seven crew members by phone were unsuccessful, raising concerns about their whereabouts.
The fishermen were subsequently rescued by local fishermen in Benin’s territorial waters on Wednesday, October 21, at about 10 p.m., three days after the incident was reported to the police.
The Western Regional Marine Police Command announced their rescue in a statement issued on Thursday, October 22.
The rescued fishermen were identified as Kofi Emmanuel, 32; Uncle Amoah, 45; Kwamena Nkum, 29; Kofi Aboagye, 36; Doboa, 35; Agya Badu, 42; and Kwamena Akyem, 40.
The Command said arrangements were underway for their safe return to Ghana, with the Marine Police, Ghana Navy and security counterparts in Benin and Togo working together to complete the repatriation process.
The circumstances that led to the canoe and its crew ending up in Benin’s territorial waters were not detailed in the statement.
