A United States immigration court has denied a bail request filed on behalf of former Ghanaian Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, deepening uncertainty over his legal battle in the United States.

At a hearing held on February 19, 2026, the court dismissed arguments by his legal team, who contended that their client required bail to access improved medical treatment outside detention.

The presiding judge ruled that the detention facility where Ofori-Atta is being held is adequately equipped to meet his medical needs, effectively rejecting claims that his health situation warranted release.

The former minister has been in immigration custody since January 6, 2026. Official records indicate that he remains detained pending further proceedings.

Attention now turns to April 27, 2026, when immigration authorities are scheduled to begin formal deportation hearings. Legal analysts suggest that the outcome of those proceedings will determine whether Ofori-Atta remains in the United States or is returned to Ghana.

His continued detention has generated significant interest both in Ghana and abroad, as observers closely monitor developments in what has become a high-profile international legal case.
