Ghana's president-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has announced a comprehensive 26-point program designed to address the nation's urgent economic issues and promote sustainable development. Mahama outlined a comprehensive plan to stabilize the economy, enhance social welfare, and advance good governance during his first 120 days in office in his first speech following the 2024 elections.
Restoring investor confidence, stabilizing the Ghanaian cedi, and lowering inflation are all major components of Mahama's program for economic recovery. The establishment of a National Economic Recovery Task Force, which will bring together specialists to offer practical solutions in the early days of his administration, is a key component of this effort. Mahama also promised to provide Ghanaians with immediate relief by suspending the Value Added Tax (VAT) on necessities like food and fuel in order to lower the cost of living.
Addressing the high levels of youth unemployment, Mahama announced plans to relaunch the “Jobs for the Youth” initiative, designed to provide opportunities for young graduates and skilled workers. In addition to economic issues, Mahama’s agenda focuses on social welfare, with proposals for a National Housing Scheme for low-income earners and a pension plan for informal sector workers.
Mahama placed a strong emphasis on accountability and openness in governance, pledging to implement changes like reorganizing the Special Prosecutor's Office and enacting legislation to protect whistleblowers. Along with extending the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover more illnesses, he also intends to invest in infrastructure, such as roads, schools, and medical facilities. Mahama wants to improve the lives of all Ghanaians while guiding the country toward inclusive prosperity and economic stability.
