KASOA, Central Region – The Central Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) commemorated the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) in Kasoa, Awutu-Senya East District, with a powerful call to prioritize funding for community resilience.

Under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,” the event gathered officials, stakeholders, and community members at the Kasoa under-bridge on Monday, October 13, 2025.

A Call for Collective Action

The Central Regional NADMO Coordinator, CDCO E. K. Dawood Mensah, addressed the gathering, urging all sectors–including government, the private sector, civil society, and individuals–to champion resilience financing. He emphasized the necessity of collectively building a "culture of prevention," where every citizen understands that preparedness saves lives, protects property, and safeguards our collective future.

“The cost of inaction, or of merely managing disasters after they strike, is always far higher than the cost of preparedness,” CDCO Mensah stated. He stressed that investment in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), mitigation, and prevention programs is essential to build societies capable of withstanding the impact of disasters.

MP Donates Relief Items to Bolster Local Capacity

In a show of local support, the Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya East, Hon. Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, donated essential relief items to the municipal NADMO stores. The donation, intended to serve as a buffer stock for the district, included roofing sheets, bags of cement, student mattresses, bales of clothing, bags of rice, and other critical supplies.

New Disaster Management Committee Inaugurated

A key highlight of the day was the official inauguration of the Awutu-Senya East Municipal Disaster Management Committee. This local-level body is tasked with planning for and responding to disasters within the municipality.

Chaired by the Municipal Chief Executive, the committee is responsible for implementing national disaster policies, updating local management plans, coordinating with agencies, and leading public education and response efforts. It was formally inaugurated by Colonel (Rtd) George Afful, Central Regional Deputy Director of NADMO in charge of Operations.

The committee's membership includes the Municipal NADMO Director (Secretary), the Member of Parliament, the Municipal Director of the Ghana Health Service, District Police Commanders for Ofankor and Kasoa, the Municipal Ghana National Fire Service Commander, the Municipal Information Officer, the Municipal Director of Education, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, the Municipal Planning Officer, the Municipal Director of Social Welfare & Community Development, and the Chairman of the ASEC DRR & CCM platform.
