Over 4000 people affected by fire, floods in Central Region – NADMO calls for urgent support for victims

The Central Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has convened a press briefing to address recent hydrometeorological disasters and fire outbreaks occurring in various MMDAs over the past two weeks, resulting in the displacement of four thousand six hundred and thirty-six (4,636) individuals, destruction of homes, and disruption of livelihoods.




The affected MMDAs include Awutu Senya East, Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West, Effutu, Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abrem, Twifo Atti Morkwaa, Hemang Lower Denkyira, Agona West, Asikuma/Odoben/Brakwa, Agona East and Cape Coast Metropolis.

According to NADMO's briefing on Tuesday, 24th June, 2025, the worst affected communities and suburbs were Cape Coast Metropolis, which includes London Bridge, Zion, Gyegyaano, OLA Madina, Aquarium, Siwdu Estate, Antem, Ntsin, Amamoma, Ekon, and Brofoyedur. The other affected suburbs comprised Kitsiwdo, Mempeasɛm, Nkanfoa, 3rd Ridge, Ayensu/Kwaprow, Adisadel (Church of Christ School), Pedu, and North Ola.

The KEEA Municipality was not spared the devastating effects of the floods either, impacting the following communities or suburbs: Teterim, Gwira Akyinim, Pershie, Peace Avenue, Ataabadze, Mmofra Akyinim, Estate and also Bronyibima, CP, Zongo, Essaman, Neizers Garden, Motel Junction, Akotobinsin and Agona.

Following this tragic incident, which destroyed several homes, displaced families and disrupted livelihoods, the Central Regional Secretariat of NADMO is making an earnest appeal to institutions, agencies, CSOs, Faith-Based Organizations, philanthropists, etc., to provide assistance to these disaster victims and support the ongoing relief and recovery efforts by the Government through NADMO.

Within this last two weeks, the region has not been exempted from the occurrences of hydrometeorological disasters with its negative impact on lives and properties.

DISASTER SITUATIONS IN THE PAST WEEK

The Region has recorded floods and fires affecting a total of four thousand six hundred and thirty-six (4,636) victims in the following MMDAs: Awutu Senya East, Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West, Effutu, Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abrem, Twifo Atti Morkwaa, Hemang Lower Denkyira, Agona West, Asikuma/Odoben/Brakwa, Agona East and Cape Coast Metro. Communities and suburbs which were severely affected in the Cape Coast Metropolis includes; London Bridge, Zion, Gyegyaano, OLA Madina, Aquarium, Siwdu Estate, Antem, Ntsin, Amamoma, Ekon, Brofoyedur, others are Kitsiwdo, Mempeasɛm, Nkanfoa, 3rd Ridge, Ayensu/Kwaprow, Adisadel (church of Christ school), Pedu and North Ola.

In the KEEA Municipality, the following communities or suburbs were the severely affected: Teterim, Gwira Akyinim, Pershie, Peace Avenue, Ataabadze, Mmofra Akyinim, Estate and the rest are; Bronyibima, CP, Zongo, Essaman, Neizers Garden, Motel Junction, Akotobinsin and Agona.

COLLAPSED BUILDING RESULTING IN 2 FATALITIES

On 21/06/25, about 07:00 hours, following torrential rains that began in the early hours in the Cape Coast Metropolis, an old storey building, made of bricks, located adjacent the famous "London bridge" Ashanti Road, Cape Coast, collapsed and trapped five (5) persons. Personnel from the NADMO; the Ghana National Fire Service; the Ambulance Service; the Metropolitan Assembly, the NIB, the RCC as well as the Ghana Police Service swiftly reported at the scene to offer assistance in the form of search & rescue and protection of lives and properties. Through the intervention of the Regional Minister- Hon Ekow Okyere Panyin Eduamoah and the Regional NADMO Director as well as MCE of Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (Hon George Justice Arthur) promptly provided earth moving equipment to aid in the timely rescue efforts as well as debris clearing. Two victims- Fredrick Kwesi Yeboah, 21 years and Obaapanyin Ataa Kakra, 79 years were rescued alive, rushed to the hospital, stabilized and are responding to treatments currently. The two other victims, Obaapanyin Ataa Panyin, 79 years, and Opanyin Emmanuel Ankaful, 84 years, were both rescued lifeless, placed in body bags provided by NADMO, rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, and confirmed dead on arrival by the attending physicians. The rescue exercise ended at 13:50 hours. However, demolition of some dilapidated houses identified by NADMO as a potential hazard, was carried out at the instructions of CCMA.

DEMOLISHING OF STRUCTURES

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) through the Metropolitan Disaster Management Committee chaired by the Mayor together with relevant agencies has embarked on a massive exercise to demolish all dilapidated buildings within the ancient city to ensure public safety and to avert further disasters in the wake of the expected massive rains predicted by Ghana Meteorological Agency and NADMO's EOC. This city-wide demolition exercise is targeted at structurally weak and dilapidated buildings, some billboards and other structures which has been identified by NADMO as 'hazards in waiting', posing serious risks to the public; the owners have been engaged already.

URGENT APPEAL FOR RELIEF ASSISTANCE FOR DISASTER VICTIMS IN THE CENTRAL REGION

The Central Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has noted that this tragic incident has left several families displaced, homes destroyed, and livelihoods disrupted, and in light of the widespread devastation and the urgent needs of the affected persons, we are making an earnest appeal to institutions, agencies, CSOs, Faith Based Organizations, Philanthropists etc. to come to the aid of these disaster victims to support ongoing relief and recovery efforts by Government through NADMO. Critical Needs Identified:

1. Food supplies and potable water

2. Temporary shelter and emergency accommodation

3. Medical services and essential health items

4. Clothing and bedding materials

5. Psychosocial support and trauma counselling

6. Financial support to assist displaced and affected families.

• Numerous households have lost their homes, belongings, and sources of income

• Vulnerable persons, including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, are in urgent need of care

• The emotional and psychological toll of the disaster has been severe. • The Ghana Police Service, for its swift mobilization, crowd control, protection and maintenance of public safety and order during the operation.

• The Ghana National Fire Service, for their timely deployment, technical support, and contribution to search & rescue and emergency response efforts.

• The NADMO Rescue Team, and all NADMO Officers who remained on-site until late into the night, demonstrating admirable dedication and professionalism in executing their duties.

• The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) and the Honourable Mayor, for providing institutional leadership, logistical support, and effective coordination throughout the emergency.

• All relevant stakeholders whose resources, expertise, and active participation significantly contributed to minimizing the impact of the incident.

• The general public, whose cooperation, volunteer efforts, and calm response were critical to the successful execution of rescue and relief operations. This joint effort reflects the power of inter-agency cooperation and community solidarity in times of crisis.
