Confusion gripped the fishing community of Nkotompo in Sekondi-Takoradi when residents confronted a group of about ten young men suspected to be engaging in sakawa rituals.

Eyewitnesses claim the men, dressed in white garments with mystical symbols, arrived in flashy cars and proceeded to drop what appeared to be a coffin wrapped in a sack into the sea.

The unusual act sparked outrage among residents, who suspected the group of performing ritual activities.

“We suspect it’s a human body. They must remove it before they leave,” one angry youth said. Another resident added, “Why didn’t they stop anywhere else but chose our sea? We won’t let them go until they remove it.”

The Assembly Member for the area, Frederick Acheampong, confirmed the incident, noting that tensions ran high until the group was escorted to the chief’s palace to restore calm.

The leader of the group, identified as Lord Ackam, strongly denied the sakawa allegations. According to him, they are members of a spiritual society known as the Spiritual Scientists. He explained that their tradition requires them to drop the belongings of a deceased member into the sea as part of funeral rites.

“We are not sakawa boys. One of our members passed away, and our rituals demand that we drop his belongings not a body into the sea. We only cast items like rosaries and candles,” Ackam clarified.

Traditional leaders later stepped in, and the group was handed over to the police for further investigations.
