Kofi Boakye, a Ghanaian businessman and godfather to musician Shatta Wale, is contesting an extradition request by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to the United States. The case is currently being heard at the Gbese District Court.
Kofi Boakye's lawyers argue that the U.S. arrest warrant was not authenticated by Ghana's diplomatic mission in the United States, which is a requirement under Ghanaian law for the document to be admissible. The FBI records indicate that Frederick Asante, associated with Kofi Boakye, transferred funds under $300,000 to suppliers, raising questions about whether these transactions were criminal or commercial arrangements. This contradicts earlier reports of $100 million.
Kofi Boakye has expressed willingness to voluntarily surrender to U.S. authorities to clear his name and defend his business reputation. He claims no connections or dealings with three other individuals facing similar charges in Ghana, except for Frederick Asante.
The Magistrate Court has adjourned the case to July 1st for a ruling on the matter. If the court rules in favor of the extradition, Kofi Boakye may be required to face charges in the United States. For extradition to be successful, the alleged crimes must be considered crimes in both countries. The Office of the Attorney General is coordinating extradition efforts with foreign governments. If Kofi Boakye is found in any jurisdiction, he will undergo extradition proceedings.
