The Ghana Police Service has made significant strides in combating cybercrime, particularly in the area of online food delivery scams. Recently, they arrested 10 suspects involved in creating fake online food delivery platforms, impersonating popular brands like Papaye, Pizzaman, KFC, and Mawarko. These suspects allegedly defrauded customers by directing them to make advance payments via mobile money, and in some cases, gained unauthorized access to victims' mobile money wallets and bank accounts.
The police operation, conducted on October 5, 2025, resulted in the destruction of several makeshift structures and equipment used for illegal mining and the seizure of 15 water pumping machines, one generator set, and 12 mobile phones. The suspects, including Elijah Sotama Etse (the syndicate leader), are currently in police custody and will face court proceedings.
This crackdown is part of a broader effort by the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority, to tackle cybercrime and online fraud. In a related operation, 65 suspects were arrested between May and July 2025, including 47 foreign nationals and 18 Ghanaians, for involvement in cybercrime and online fraud.
The police have urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to these scams to report to the nearest police station. This move demonstrates Ghana's commitment to strengthening its digital security environment and protecting citizens from cyber-enabled crimes.
