Hawa Koomson, the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, was allegedly attacked by thugs at a polling station in Ablekuma North during the ongoing parliamentary election rerun. The incident occurred at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, one of the 19 polling stations where the rerun is taking place.
According to eyewitnesses, Koomson's presence at the polling station sparked tension, which escalated into chaos when unidentified thugs allegedly questioned her presence. The situation worsened when Koomson pulled out pepper spray, which led to a violent clash between NPP and NDC supporters. Koomson was beaten by the thugs, who kicked and dragged her on the ground. Police officers intervened to rescue her, and she was whisked away to safety
The Ablekuma North parliamentary seat has been vacant since the 2024 elections due to unresolved disputes over election results. The Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting the rerun in 19 polling stations to address verification issues from the December 2024 general elections. The NPP had initially declared a boycott of the rerun, but their parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, defied the directive and participated in the contest.
Some Ghanaians have taken to social media to share their views on the attack, with many criticizing the violence and calling for improved security measures. Others have referenced Koomson's past actions, including a previous incident where she was involved in a shooting, suggesting that she has earned enemies for herself.
