Mfantsipim School comes from behind to win third NSMQ trophy

In the finals of the 2024 National Science and Math Quiz, Mfantsipim School "miraculously" won its third trophy.

In the last and fifth rounds of the competition, the crowd was taken aback by BOTWE, as they are popularly known, when they correctly solved the final mystery question to gain a point advantage over St. Augustine's College.

After losing to Mfantsipim in the last round, AUGUSCO, who had been up by a point until the fifth round, was unable to sustain their dazzling effort to win the match.

At the conclusion of the match, Mfantsipim scored 47 points, St. Augustine's College scored 46, and Keta SHS scored 32.

BOTWE, in addition to the trophy was awarded GHC10,000 for scoring the highest point of the day sponsored by Pepsodent.

Mfantsipim took home their second title in 2014 after winning the competition for the first time in 1999. In 2000 and 2016, BOTWE finished second in two competitions. Since the beginning of the NSMQ, the school has advanced to five finals.

After winning the competition twice, in 2007 and 2019, St. Augustine's was aiming for their third trophy.

In addition to becoming two-time NSMQ finalists, KETASCO, the current Volta-Oti Zonal champions, advanced to the semi-finals in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023.

The "Dzo Lalians" were unable to match the intensity of BOTWE and AUGUSCO in the finals, but they were able to make up some ground in the fifth round by responding to two riddle questions, raising their score from 27 to 32 points.
