Celebrated Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has addressed recent comments by US-based Ghanaian entertainer Archipalago, who questioned his Ashanti heritage following the announcement of the Rapperholic concert in Kumasi.
Weeks ago, Sarkodie paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace to officially seek his counsel and blessings ahead of hosting his annual Rapperholic concert in Kumasi. The Asantehene approved the move, a development that stirred reactions online. Archipalago, however, argued that Sarkodie is not Ashanti and suggested he was only using the region to promote his brand.
Responding in an interview in Kumasi, Sarkodie debunked those claims, stating that historically, he is Ashanti. He further revealed that Otumfuo himself had directed one of his chiefs to allocate him land in Kumasi to build a house, a gesture that affirms his strong ties with the Ashanti Kingdom.
Sarkodie added that since he predominantly raps in Twi, the Ashanti people naturally connect with his music. “Most of my songs are in Twi, and that makes it easier for the Ashanti people to relate to my art,” he said.
With the backing of the Asantehene and the connection he enjoys with his Ashanti fanbase, Sarkodie is poised to stage one of the most memorable Rapperholic concerts in Kumasi.
