Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has finally opened up in detail about the circumstances surrounding the infamous leaked tape that shook her career in 2021.
Speaking in a candid interview, the Afrobeats queen revealed that the video was not leaked by accident as she was initially told, but was in fact part of a bet orchestrated by her then-boyfriend and his friends.
"The person was my boyfriend at the time. He said he wanted to save the video but pressed send by accident. I later found out it was a bet with his friends,” Tiwa disclosed.
The singer, who has consistently been open about her struggles during that period, described the incident as one of the darkest moments of her life. According to her, the betrayal went beyond the act of leaking the video — it shattered her trust in someone she thought she loved.
Back in 2021, the news of the leaked tape dominated social media, with many speculating about how it surfaced. At the time, Tiwa admitted she had been blackmailed after the video was mistakenly uploaded to Snapchat before it was deleted. However, someone had already downloaded it and began using it to extort her.
She recalled that alongside losing her father in the same year, the scandal pushed her to the edge. “It was one of the lowest points of my life. I survived by refusing to let the situation define me or my career,” she said in an earlier interview.
Despite the controversy, Tiwa Savage has since bounced back stronger, cementing her place as one of Africa’s most influential female artists. She continues to headline global concerts, collaborate with international stars, and inspire women with her resilience.
