The Zuarungu Senior High School has been indefinitely closed following violent clashes between students of Gurune and Kusasi ethnic backgrounds. The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, ordered the closure after tensions spiraled out of control on campus.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, July 20, 2025, was reportedly triggered by the alleged theft of a mobile phone. What began as a minor altercation escalated into a full-blown conflict, resulting in significant unrest and the destruction of school property. Some buildings were allegedly set ablaze during the chaos.
Authorities say four students have been implicated in the incident. Three of them have been arrested and are currently in police custody. The fourth suspect is still at large and is believed to be in possession of a police officer’s firearm magazine—raising serious security concerns.
In response to the unrest, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) convened an emergency meeting, which culminated in the decision to close the school indefinitely. Hon. Atanga emphasized the importance of student safety and maintaining peace within the educational environment.
“Until calm is fully restored and we are confident that there is no longer any threat to life or property, the school will remain closed,” he stated.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to issue a formal statement on the matter. Meanwhile, security personnel have been deployed to the campus to maintain order and prevent further disturbances.
