In a momentous ceremony at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, the King and Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, honored James Kumbeni, a cyclist and climate activist from Bolgatanga, with a traditional smock, its matching hat, and other undisclosed gifts. The gesture is the highest honor granted by the Dagbon Kingdom to distinguished individuals.
James Kumbeni, affectionately known as Keekee James, embarked on an ambitious cycling tour from Bolgatanga to Yendi as part of his nationwide Climate Action Cycling Tour. The journey, which spans multiple regions, highlights the crucial role of cycling in combating climate change, celebrates Ghana’s rich tourism attractions, and showcases the vibrant cultural heritage of the country.
The Overlord commended James for his commitment to environmental sustainability and cultural advocacy. Expressing his gratitude, James said:
“Honored by Ya-Na: A Milestone on My #ClimateAction Journey. I never imagined this day would come in my life, but here it is. I never thought my bicycle could take me this far, yet here I stand."
James also shared his intention to embark on an international cycling journey from Ghana to Morocco, receiving the King’s blessings and well wishes for the endeavor.
James’ tour included stops in key towns such as Walewale, Gambaga, Nakpanduri, and Saboba before arriving in Yendi. Along the way, he engaged communities in discussions about climate change, emphasizing the importance of cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. His journey also celebrated Ghana’s diverse cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes, further inspiring pride in the nation’s traditions.
James first gained national recognition in 2024 when he cycled from Bolgatanga to Accra, a feat that catapulted him into the spotlight. Since then, his dedication to promoting environmental awareness and cultural pride through cycling has earned him admiration across the country.
The honor bestowed by Ya-Na Abukari II symbolizes not only James’ personal achievements but also the importance of his mission. The King’s gesture demonstrates the significance of uniting climate action with cultural preservation, creating a legacy that bridges the past and the future.
