Their Behavior Is What Lands Them In Trouble With The Police And The Court Akufo Addo Reacts To Arrest Of Galamsey Protesters

President Nana Akufo-Addo recently commented on the arrest of anti-galamsey protesters from the Democracy Hub. In a response during an interview with France 24, he highlighted that it wasn't the act of protesting that led to the arrests, but rather the behavior of the protesters, which clashed with law enforcement, ultimately landing them in trouble. According to the President, Ghana's judicial system, not his administration, is responsible for dealing with such cases, emphasizing that the courts would determine the outcomes based on the charges of unlawful assembly and breach of peace.

Akufo-Addo also pointed out that he fully supports the right to protest, recalling his own history of leading demonstrations in the past. However, he maintained that public order must be upheld, and the law enforced, when necessary. This follows the arrest of Democracy Hub protesters who were demonstrating against the environmental damage caused by illegal mining (galamsey), an issue that continues to stir controversy and public outcry in Ghana.

The arrests sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the government's handling of protests and the protesters' right to freely express their views on the galamsey crisis. The President's remarks aim to clarify the government's stance, asserting that the legal process must take its course while reaffirming his respect for peaceful protests.
