For Ghanaian singer and songwriter Lawrence Mensah, professionally known as Muzic Mensah, music has been a journey of transformation, self-discovery and artistic reinvention.

His career, which began in the gospel music space, has since evolved into contemporary highlife and Afrobeats, marking a significant transition in both his sound and artistic identity.
Mensah entered Ghana’s public music scene in 2004, establishing himself within the gospel sector. For approximately a decade, from 2004 to 2014, he recorded and performed music largely centered on Christian and church-related themes.
Those years provided him with the musical foundation and performance experience that would later influence his approach to songwriting and production.
Despite his involvement in gospel music, Mensah eventually stepped away from the genre. In subsequent media interviews, he pointed to structural difficulties within the local church music environment, particularly concerns about sustained financial backing, promotion and opportunities for artists. These challenges contributed to his decision to take a hiatus from the gospel scene and reassess the direction of his musical career.
After several years away, Mensah returned to the music scene in 2021, this time adopting the stage name Muzic Mensah and pursuing a different creative direction. His comeback saw him embrace contemporary highlife and Afrobeats, allowing him to explore themes and sounds beyond the boundaries of his earlier gospel career.
Working under Triple M Records, Muzic Mensah has released a series of secular songs that demonstrate his evolving musical identity. His catalogue includes “Obi Besú” (2023), “Lady in Red” (2024), and “All Correct” (2026). The songs combine elements of traditional West African highlife particularly guitar-driven arrangements with modern Afro-pop production techniques, creating a sound that reflects both Ghanaian musical heritage and contemporary influences.
His transition has also represented more than simply a change in musical genre. It has given Mensah an opportunity to broaden his creative expression while maintaining the values and experiences that shaped him during his years in gospel music. His current body of work continues to explore themes such as resilience, self-confidence, personal growth and the pursuit of progress.
Today, Muzic Mensah divides his time between Ghana and the United States, continuing to develop his career and expand his audience. His journey from gospel music to secular highlife illustrates how an artist can evolve creatively while drawing on experiences from different stages of life.
From his beginnings in the gospel sector in 2004 to his re-emergence as a contemporary highlife and Afrobeats artist in 2021, Muzic Mensah’s story is one of reinvention.
Rather than abandoning his musical roots, he has built upon them to create a broader artistic identity one that connects Ghana’s rich highlife tradition with the sound and sensibilities of modern African music.
