Illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has long posed a serious threat to Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and local communities. The Government of Ghana has done all it can to tackle the grave situation over the years, but their efforts have yielded close to no results.

In a bold move to tackle this growing crisis, the Okyehene, Osagyefuo Nana Amoatia Ofori Panin II, has entrusted Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Chief (Sariki) Abass Giwa with the responsibility of leading efforts to combat illegal mining in the Eastern Region.

This appointment underscores the urgency of protecting the land and natural resources for future generations. With his influence and leadership, Chief (Sariki) Abass Giwa is expected to play a crucial role in enforcing sustainable mining practices, engaging stakeholders, and ensuring that illegal miners are held accountable.

Okyehene Osagyefuo Nana Amoatia Ofori Panin II said emotionally that his main concern is tackling the issue of water pollution. In his submission, he said that most people in almost all parts of Ghana depend on our water bodies for survival; hence, there is a need to have them clean and safe for consumption. Okyehene reiterated that he is concerned about the future generations as “water is life”. So if nothing is done about the situation, it can only worsen.

Speaking at the Okyehene’s palace in Kyebi, a town in the Eastern Region, Chief (Sariki) Abass Giwa assured the highly respected royal that he will deliver his duties responsibly to help root out this problem of illegal mining once and for all.

“I am glad and happy that you have given me this role to fight galamsey. I want to assure everyone that I am not a land grabber or landguard, we are not here to take people’s land from them. What we want to do is offer our services to Mother Ghana. I can tell that the issue is deeply affecting Osagyefuo Nana Amoatia Ofori Panin II especially when it comes to the issue of water pollution, we shall tackle the root cause once and for all and restore order to the land”, Chief Abass Sariki Giwa assured.

Chief (Sariki) Abass Giwa, again, in an interaction with media houses was asked how much he was being paid for his appointment to fight galamsey.

In response, Chief Abass said vehemently that the role comes with no financial remunerations. He noted that as a Ghanaian, he sees this as an opportunity to give back to his nation, thus, it is not costing the taxpayers money a penny to carry out this task.

The fight against illegal mining in Ghana requires bold leadership, commitment, and collective effort. With the appointment of Chief Abass Sariki Giwa by Okyehene Osagyefuo Nana Amoatia Ofori Panin II, there is renewed hope that concrete action will be taken to curb the devastating effects of galamsey, particularly in the Eastern Region.

Chief Abass’s assurance of executing his role with integrity, without financial gain, reinforces the sincerity of this mission. His commitment to restoring Ghana’s land and water bodies aligns with the Okyehene’s vision of a sustainable and secure future for generations to come.

As this fight unfolds, the success of this initiative will depend not only on leadership but also on the cooperation of stakeholders, local communities, and enforcement agencies. Ghana’s future depends on the choices made today, and with determined efforts, the nation can reclaim its environment and secure clean water for all.
