“I Can’t Afford the New Tariffs Imposed by President John Mahama” – Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danqua Slams NDC Government

UPSA lecturer, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danqua, has expressed strong displeasure over the recent tariff adjustments announced under President John Mahama’s administration.

According to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), water tariffs have been increased by 15.92% while electricity tariffs have gone up by 9%. Dr. Boakye-Danqua lamented that these increments come at a time when many professionals, including university lecturers, are grappling with stagnant salaries and rising living costs.

Speaking on the matter, Dr. Boakye-Danqua stated that his “meagre salary” can no longer accommodate the growing financial demands imposed by the new tariffs. He argued that the government has failed to consider the economic realities facing ordinary Ghanaians, particularly public-sector workers whose incomes have not been adjusted to match the recent hikes.

He described the increments as insensitive and burdensome, insisting that the NDC government should focus on improving economic conditions rather than introducing additional hardship.

Dr. Boakye-Danqua further called on the government to reconsider the tariff adjustments and introduce measures that protect workers from escalating utility costs.

He urged policymakers to prioritize economic management and reduce what he termed “avoidable pressure” on citizens. Until salaries are reviewed to reflect current economic pressures, he maintained, the new tariffs remain unreasonable and will continue to fuel dissatisfaction among Ghanaians.
