University of Professional Studies (UPSA) lecturer Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danqua, has launched a strong critique against the decision to extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP John Y. Yohonu, arguing that the police chief has “done nothing to warrant an extension.”

According to him, IGP Yohonu appears exhausted and out of touch with the pressing security needs of the country, making the extension both unjustified and counterproductive. He asserts that the police under Yohonu’s leadership has not demonstrated the level of transformation or discipline expected in such a sensitive position.

Dr. Boakye-Danqua further slammed President John Dramani Mahama and the Police Council for approving the extension despite clear signals that crime rates and police-related bribery reports have risen under the current administration.

He claimed that the service has lost the momentum it once had, and citizens are increasingly expressing frustration over the perceived decline in visibility, responsiveness, and professionalism among officers. To him, extending the tenure of a leader who has not met performance expectations sends the wrong signal to both the police hierarchy and the Ghanaian public.

He stressed that the country needs fresh energy, new strategies, and a leader capable of restoring confidence in the service. With rising security concerns and growing complaints of corruption among officers, Dr. Boakye-Danqua believes Ghana cannot afford leadership that merely maintains the status quo.
