NDC without a defence minister has done better with security than NPP in their entire 8 years - Hon. Issifu Mahmoud

The Member of Parliament for Binduri, Hon. Issifu Mahmoud, has strongly responded to criticisms made by Dr. Palgrave Boakye Danquah regarding the extension of IGP John Y. Yohonu’s tenure.

According to the MP, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has demonstrated remarkable stability and efficiency in the security sector even without a substantive Defence Minister far outperforming the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during its entire eight years in office.

He argued that Dr. Palgrave’s claim that the IGP does not deserve an extension is politically motivated and ignores the visible improvements in the nation’s security under the current administration.

Hon. Mahmoud noted that under the NDC, major security institutions have recorded fewer high-profile breaches, responded swiftly to emerging threats, and maintained calm across regions that previously experienced unrest. He emphasized that the security architecture, from intelligence coordination to community policing, has shown greater coherence and professionalism despite the temporary absence of a Defence Minister.

To him, this is proof that the leadership of IGP Yohonu has been both effective and stabilizing, contradicting narratives that seek to undermine the police chief’s contribution.

The Binduri MP further argued that extending the IGP’s tenure is justified, particularly at a time when continuity is crucial for sustaining ongoing reforms within the Ghana Police Service. He accused Dr. Palgrave of shifting blame without acknowledging the systemic lapses and security failures recorded under the former NPP administration. Mahmoud maintained that the NDC’s performance speaks for itself, and that the government remains committed to strengthening Ghana’s security framework through consistency, accountability, and strong leadership qualities he believes IGP Yohonu continues to embody.
