The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has officially commissioned a new office of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) in Ho, marking a significant milestone in strengthening food security and improving agricultural value chains in the region.

The commissioning ceremony, held in Ho, brought together traditional leaders, government officials, farmers’ associations, and stakeholders in the agricultural sector who applauded the initiative as a timely response to the growing demand for sustainable food storage and distribution systems.

In his address, Hon. James Gunu highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that no food harvested by hardworking Ghanaian farmers goes to waste. He noted that the presence of NAFCO in the Volta Region would not only create jobs but also stabilize food prices, support the National School Feeding Programme, and provide ready markets for local farmers. “This initiative is about securing the future of agriculture in our region and ensuring that our farmers get the value they deserve,” he emphasized.

The new NAFCO office is expected to serve as a hub for food stockpiling, distribution, and preservation, strengthening efforts to achieve food security in the Volta Region and beyond. Farmers expressed optimism that the development would reduce post-harvest losses and enhance their livelihoods, while stakeholders in education and health noted that the move would further boost social intervention programmes dependent on food supply.

The CEO of NAFCO, Mr. George Abradu-Otoo, pledged to ensure consistent supply, strict adherence to quality standards, and a thorough review of operations to reposition the buffer stock system for greater impact.

The Volta Regional Manager of NAFCO, Mr. Delali Bright Kugbeadzor, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and individuals whose unwavering support made this possible, including their swift intervention in securing furniture for the new office.

The commissioning of the NAFCO in Ho has been hailed as a progressive step towards building a resilient agricultural economy that benefits both farmers and consumers across Ghana.
