If the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is aware that voter apathy led to their demise, Professor Ransford Gyampo is questioning the reasoning for their plan to form a committee to look into why they lost the 2024 elections.
According to the lecturer at the University of Ghana, the ruling party's setback is due to more than just voter indifference, which the party should not minimize in order to determine the real reason for their problems.
He claims that it is "propaganda" and akin to "tickling themselves and laughing" for the NPP members to believe that they lost the election because their constituents did not cast ballots.
"So, in my opinion, people should stop laughing and tickling themselves if they know that their poor performance and defeat in this election were caused by their apathy," he stated on TV3's KeyPoints on Saturday, December 28, 2024.
He continued by asking whether a commission of investigation is necessary if the party has determined that its members' unwillingness to cast ballots was the reason for their defeat.
He asked, "Why are they now forming a committee to investigate the reasons behind their defeat?" "It is clear whether the cause is simply indifference. Why is it necessary to form a committee to investigate the causes for your defeat? He inquired further.
The lecturer in political science claims that instead of wasting money on a committee, he began documenting the causes behind the NPP's 2022 setback and asked the party to contact him on the subject.
They shouldn't consider spending enough money, in my opinion. Visit us for a consultation, and we will explain all the reasons behind the NPP's historic and unparalleled electoral loss in the 2024 elections. In 2022, we began identifying and documenting this," he continued.
He made his remarks in response to the NPP's declaration that it would form a committee to look into the reasons behind the party's loss in the most recent elections, which gave the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) a two-thirds majority in parliament and a significant lead in the presidential contest.
This was disclosed by Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the party's national chairman, during a press conference on Monday, December 23, 2024.
He stated that in order to identify the reasons for the loss, the proposed Election Review Committee will consult with the public and party stakeholders. Mr. Ntim pointed out that this will guide the party's reforms to make it stronger going forward.
"The party will establish an impartial and efficient Election Review Committee in January 2025 to conduct a postmortem on the election's results. The committee will discuss the causes and conditions that led to our defeat with the public and all party stakeholders," he said.
The party chairman went on to say that one important topic the committee would look into is whether a constitutional reform should be made to reorganize the party's internal decision-making process, which includes choosing party leaders and presidential and parliamentary candidates.
