Internal disputes and problems with governance caused NPP to lose—NAPO

The main cause of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) recent electoral loss, according to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the party's running partner in the general election of 2024, is internal party strife.

In the general election held on December 7, 2024, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) won a landslide victory, allowing John Mahama to return to the presidency after the NPP failed to secure a third consecutive term.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda, NAPO cited the party's long-standing governance problems as a major reason why its result at the polls was poor.

He maintained that the NPP's organizational shortcomings and unsolved internal tensions were more significant causes of the loss than only economic difficulties.

Citing prior instances where the NPP had to learn important lessons from its blunders, NAPO underlined that these governance challenges have been a persistent concern for the party.

MPs begged people to cast their ballots, but they refused to do so. That has to do with a long-standing issue that the party hasn't addressed, not economic mismanagement.

"It is impossible to envision yourself as a master of everything at all times. There are some things that happen to you and you can't do anything about it. The NPP is not the only group that has been negatively impacted.

We were not represented in parliament in 1992. Both the nation and the party gained knowledge. Since the party lost the parliamentary and presidential elections in that year, they wrote a fabricated verdict and declared their intention to boycott parliament.

The decision was made by a party. The same party then convened and declared that their boycott of parliament was inappropriate. They said that accepting the few seats we were able to secure was preferable to boycotting. Thus, the nation and the party underwent changes," he continued.
