The early hours of Monday, January 13, 2025, saw the destruction of former President Nana Akufo-Addo's statue, which shocked the people of Sekondi-Takoradi. This comes after the statue's leg was vandalized in December of last year.
On November 6, as part of his Thank-you Tour of the Western Region, the former president erected the statue in front of Sekondi's Effia Nkwanta Hospital. Many locals were unhappy with its unveiling, which provoked intense criticism.
They contended in an interview with Channel One TV that the former president's services to the area were insufficient to warrant such a memorial.
Despite previous threats to demolish the statue, some locals responded to the recent removal by denouncing the act and said there may have been a more suitable approach to resolve their issues.
"Even though there were complaints regarding its erection, there could have been a more appropriate and civil way to remove it rather than just destroying it like that," a resident told Channel One TV, adding that "it is just unfortunate that it has happened this way, because what has happened can create a negative impression about the current party in government, even though they might not support it, it could be an intentional thing to bring them down."
Another resident Ekua Tawiah, added, “It is very painful for such an act to happen because the stationing of the statues has not caused any harm to anyone nor does it demand water or food from anyone, I feel they shouldn’t have destroyed it.” She said.
However, some residents also support the decision on the statue being vandalized.
"There is no sense in the stationing of the statue, the roads are still under construction, it is good we have destroyed it and nothing can happen," stated another homeowner, who did not provide his name. They ought to concentrate on the road rather than the statue.
