The head of the Anointed Palace Chapel (APC), Rev. Kwaku Obofour, has issued a warning against unwarranted criticism of the government of John Dramani Mahama.
When the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party's detractors remained silent under the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) rule, Rev. Obofour spoke to them during a church service and urged them to refrain from unjustly criticizing Mahama's leadership.
He clarified that he felt the need to end the pattern of selective criticism, in which opponents only voice their opinions when the NDC is in power, even though the incoming president has not given him the authority to do so.
He urged Ghanaians not to speak out now because many stayed quiet during the "hardships" under the previous government, which was led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
If you were unable to speak when the dollar was worth 17 Ghana cedis, please stop talking when it reaches 35 Ghana cedis. Under the pretense of being a well-known journalist or clergyman, we will not permit anyone to cast doubt on us.
"As you have done for years under the NPP, keep your mouth shut because we will attack you if you come out. If you believe that your voice matters, then credible media outlets will choose your comments regarding topics, he added.
The cleric emphasised the apparent lack of accountability expected of the departing administration and voiced worries about the double standards in Ghanaian politics.
He emphasised how crucial it is to back Mahama's initiatives to overcome the problems facing the country that were faced under the NPP.
We should continue to maintain that stance under Mahama if we all felt that the NPP needed time to improve the nation. He asserted that the NPP and NDC have the same bloodline.
"Under this [NPP] government, the dollar went from four to seventeen Ghana cedis, but nobody said anything." What is the current price of 5 kg of rice? This is the height of hypocrisy, and occasionally young people who listen to me and those with the authority to speak out on these matters call us hypocrites," he said.
