Cletus Seidu Dapilah, the Jirapa Constituency Member of Parliament, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reevaluate the dates of their parliamentary primaries.
Dapilah was disappointed by the amount of first-time Members of Parliament who will not be returning to the 9th Parliament, as she stated on GHOne TV. He underlined that two years is not enough time to evaluate an MP's performance.
In order to provide MPs ample opportunity to prove their competence, Dapilah recommended that political parties reevaluate the dates of their parliamentary primaries.
He based this on his personal experience in the departing Parliament, where he was challenged during his first two years, which he feels is insufficient to properly evaluate the impact of an MP.
He also argued in favor of extending the tenure of new Members of Parliament, emphasizing the value of letting them develop in their positions.
In order to preserve important insights, Dapilah also recommended that departing MPs with more experience be asked to share their knowledge and expertise with the incoming members.
"I am unhappy because I have observed that many first-time visitors are not returning. It may not necessarily be your fault to serve in parliament for a single term, and I have long maintained that two years is not a reliable way to evaluate an MP. The scheduling of the political parties' parliamentary primaries should be examined.
You must come to Parliament, take your time learning, and even find your way around the building because it is a school. To do that, you need time to figure out which office this is, where to go to pick it up, and how to use parliamentary procedure.
