New Appliances Can Also Be Substandard – Energy Commission Warns Hoteliers

The Energy Commission has cautioned hoteliers against assuming that newly purchased electrical appliances are automatically energy-efficient, stressing the need to check whether such products meet approved standards.

The warning was issued by Hubert Nsoh Zane, Manager of Energy Efficiency Regulation at the Energy Commission, during a stakeholder workshop with members of the Hotel Association in Bolgatanga on August 14 at the Tap Hotel.

Mr Zane said both old and new appliances could contribute to higher electricity bills if consumers failed to make informed choices.

He particularly advised those purchasing new appliances to look for the Energy Guide, identified by its yellow label, before making a purchase.

“We say that ‘no label, no good’ because you can have a brand new product which is substandard,” he said.

He explained that the Energy Commission’s concern was not limited to second-hand appliances, noting that new products must also comply with the Commission’s regulations and the relevant standards of the Ghana Standards Authority.

“It is not just old ones but also the new ones must meet the new Energy Commission regulations and standards by the Ghana Standards Authority,” Mr Zane added.

He also warned that older appliances could consume more electricity as they age, potentially causing users to spend more on electricity bills than they saved when purchasing the products.

The Commission therefore urged hoteliers to pay close attention to energy efficiency when purchasing electrical equipment for their facilities.
