Just two months before the general election, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been proclaimed the majority in parliament.
On October 17, 2023, Speaker of the Parliament Alban Bagbin made the announcement. Four parliamentary seats were formally declared vacant by Alban Sumana Bagbin. Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of the NDC, Andrew Amoakoh Asiama of Fomena, Hon. Kojo Asante, the NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, and Cynthia Morrison of the NPP, representing Agona West, are the MPs impacted.
"Mr. Speaker, the NPP is no longer the majority. According to the Constitution, these members must resign from their positions," Dr. Forson said. As Parliament moves into a pivotal phase before the 2024 elections, he encouraged the Speaker to respect the rule, so terminating the NPP's claim to a majority in legislation. This debate is a result of past actions taken by a few NPP MPs, such as the MP for Fomena, to run as independents in the wake of internal party strife. With its numerical advantage already established, the NDC is pushing for the implementation of the constitutional clause, which has the potential to drastically tip the scales in the last few months of the current Parliament.
