The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) is calling for the cancellation of the contract awarded to Ribade Company Limited for the construction of the National Cathedral project in Ghana. This comes after CHRAJ's investigation revealed several irregularities and potential breaches of Ghana's Public Procurement Act.
CHRAJ's findings indicate that Ribade Company Limited lacks the necessary qualifications, experience, and financial capacity to undertake a project of this magnitude. The company was awarded the contract through a sole-source method, without a competitive bidding process, which is a fundamental requirement under the Public Procurement Act.
The decision to award the contract without adequate justification is seen as a violation of the law. CHRAJ is urging the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to take swift action and cancel the contract to uphold the principles of transparency, fairness, and accountability in public procurement.
The controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project has been ongoing, with concerns raised about the project's cost, its prioritization amid the country's economic challenges, and the perceived lack of transparency in its implementation. The PPA has acknowledged CHRAJ's report and stated that it will carefully review the findings and recommendations before taking any action.
