The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially endorsed the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.
This decision comes after the GFP's own presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, was disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) due to errors in his nomination forms. The GFP's original flagbearer, Akua Donkor, had passed away suddenly, leading to the substitution of Appiah Kubi as the party's candidate.
According to Jerry Addo, the Deputy General Secretary of the GFP, the party's decision to support Mahama was reached after extensive consultations with the party's executives. Addo emphasized that the GFP was not coerced or influenced into making this decision.
The GFP's endorsement of Mahama is largely due to the alignment of the party's values and goals with those of the NDC. Specifically, the GFP was impressed by the NDC's campaign promises, including the establishment of a Women's Development Bank and the provision of free tertiary education for first-year students and the physically challenged.
These policies were particularly close to the heart of the late Akua Donkor, who had been a strong advocate for women's empowerment and education. By endorsing Mahama, the GFP is effectively continuing Donkor's legacy and pursuing the party's core values.
The GFP's endorsement of Mahama is seen as a significant boost to the NDC's campaign ahead of the December 7 elections. With the GFP's support, Mahama is likely to gain more traction among voters who had previously supported the GFP.
