Tensions are running high in Ghana as the police have intercepted 88 individuals suspected of being recruited for unauthorized election security ¹. The group, comprising 86 men and two women, was arrested on December 3, 2024, at Benchema near Asawinso in the Western North Region.
According to reports, the suspects were traveling in two Metro Mass Transit buses when they were apprehended. Preliminary investigations revealed that they were recruited from various locations within the Greater Accra Region, including Adenta, Oyarifa, and Madina.
The police are still investigating the matter, and efforts are underway to locate the alleged recruiter. The Ghana Police Service has sent a strong warning to individuals engaging in recruitment scams .
It's worth noting that the police must solely handle security operations during elections, as emphasized by Ambassador Francis Tsegah, a fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development . The Ghana Police Service has also distanced itself from statements made by a senior police officer concerning election security .
