A Ghanaian scholar, Rev. Dr. James Yamoah has been appointed as the fourth President of the Ghana Christian University College at Amrahia near Accra in the Greater Accra Region, succeeding Dr. Nelson Swedstrup Ahlijah.
The colourful and festive investiture ceremony, held on Saturday, March 01, 2025, was very well attended by several dignitaries with a large number of friends and family from Ghana and broad, alumni as well as Faculty and Staff of Ghana Christian University College.
The University College, founded by African Missionary Evangelism (AME) of the United States of America in 1966, has been guided by a succession of dedicated leaders with Dr. Yamoah serving as the third Ghanaian president to head the College.
Dr. Yamoah, a distinguished alumnus of the institution, has demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership, progressing from student to SRC President, and through the ranks of Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Dean of Students, Dean of School of Theology, and Vice-President.
Chairman of the Governing Council of the University College, professor Samuel K. Offei congratulated and welcomed the new President on his well-deserved appointment as the Chief Academic and Administrative Head. He expressed the confidence of the Council and Trustees in his extensive experience and deep understanding of the institution to guide it towards achieving chartered University status soon.
The Council chairman called on the staff, students, and alumni to extend their full support and loyalty to the new President as they collectively strive to elevate the Ghana Christian University College to new heights.
Speaking after the induction, the new President while expressing his gratitude for the honour, detailed his strategic vision and action plan for the Ghana Christian University College (GhanaCU) for the Next Four Years. This he explained have been prepared in alignment with the institution’s Vision and Mission Statements as well as the Financial Sustainability Plan and the Medium-Term Strategic Plan for 2025/6 – 2029/30 academic years.
Key areas of focus he outlined included pursuing the institution’s charter application to a successful conclusion, seek alternative funding besides internally generated funds, revival of the business office to operate commercially, the creation of more undergraduate schools, increase the population of undergraduate students and engage more qualified resource persons.
Other areas of focus include actualizing the institution’s vision to establish a graduate school, promote publications in peer-reviewed journals, seek fruitful collaborations with institutions, boost faculty and staff development, create additional learning centers or classrooms, lobby financial institutions for vehicles and beautify the frontage and entire campus, amongst others.
Rev. Dr. Yamoah has played a vital role in institutional governance at the Ghana Christian University College, chairing several key committees, including the Academic Board of the Centre for Theology and Economics (CETEC), the University College Disciplinary Committee, the Charter Committee, the Institutional Reaccreditation Committee, and the Graduation & Matriculation Committee.
Academic and Professional Credentials
He pursued a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biological Sciences at the University of Science & Technology (now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, KNUST) in Kumasi and further enrolled at the Ghana Christian College and Seminary (now Ghana Christian University College), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Religious Studies in 2002.
Upon graduation, he was enrolled to serve as a member of the Faculty from where he further obtained a Master's degree in Religion with a concentration in Biblical Studies at the Cincinnati Christian University (CCU) in Ohio, USA.
He later furthered his studies at the South African Theological Seminary, earning a Ph.D. in Theology, in 2015.
Contributions to Ghana Christian University College
Rev. Dr. Yamoah, elected to the position in November, 2024, has since joining the Ghana Christian University College in 2002, played key roles in its academic and administrative development. From 2002 to 2006, he served as an Instructor and Warden of Men, later becoming a lecturer, Dean of Students, and School Chaplain from 2006 to 2012.
Between 2012 and 2018, he served as the Dean of School of Theology (now the Faculty of Theology & Ministry).His leadership trajectory continued with his promotion to a Senior Lecturer in 2014. In December 2018, he was officially appointed Vice President, after serving in Acting position for six (6) months.
